Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why are you doing this?

For the laugh. Actually it's a sort of look-and-see tutorial for building a mini-application using the Dojo JavaScript Toolkit. All the JavaScript code is in the tags.js file, if you're interested. There's also an introduction to the code.

2. OK, so what's with the Google ads you money-grubbing capitalist you!

Oh come on, nobody puts stuff on the web without Google ads these days. You left-wing pinko you!

3. Well, it's not even original, is it?

Ah, no. Not really. Call it an interpretation. But credit where credit is due: Improving Customer Experience gave me the idea, and Dojo gave me the ability to implement it. Oh, and thanks to the A List Apart gang for the Holy Grail.

4. Your site is crap. I want to use a different tag generator.

But I have the most features! Seriously? Well alright then. Here are some other generators that seem pretty decent:

And if you'd like me to put your tag generator in this list, just let me know.

5. It doesn't work!.

Well first you're going to need JavaScript activated, and secondly you'll need to be using a relatively modern browser. Thirdly, the site uses cookies to save your settings, so they'll need to be active too. Still not working? Please send me a mail and I'll try to fix it. Thanks!

What Are Tags Anyway?

Tags are just keywords. They help search engines and blog sites find your blog entries. All you have to do is stick a few relevant tags at the bottom of your blogs posts, and people are much more likely to find your blog entries when they are searching.

So what's the catch? Well, the tags need to be in a particular HTML format. And that's what this site does for you — instead of writing the tag HTML by hand, you just enter a list of tags, press a button, and cut-and-paste the generated HTML into your blog entry. No effort required!

If you'd like to know more about tags, here are some links:

By the way, your blog software may already be able to generate tags for you - but you'll have to check yourself...

Credits

Here are the people who have made this little site possible:

The Dojo JavaScript Toolkit
The best JavaScript foundation out there. I checked 'em all out, and this one is the best. No Doubt about it.

Improving Customer Experience
The original tag generator that gave me the idea to do this. When I saw their site, I thought: "Hey, let's do that in JavaScript!"

A List Apart
You may have noticed that the columns on this site work out rather nicely. It's all down to a really cool column layout. Thanks guys!
